Women And Islam / Las Mujeres y el Islam

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahamatullahi wa Barakatuh

Alaa Murabit: What my religion really says about women #TED :
#TED
http://on.ted.com/b0wGl

We can't sit and watch, we can't let them rule for us and telling us what to believe in, what to do, where to stand, we are more than that, we have a voice, we can make decisions, we are part of society not a possesion that it brings to men. We will never be fully accepted until we get up and fight, until we educate our children equally without putting our cultures first.
Women in Islam are important for the society and musn't be pushed away, we are needed, that's why the Ummah was strong before, women had a high role, this is why the Ummah is broken now, women have been pushed away from it.

Feminism / Feminismo

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh

I'm writing this to clear up some points about feminism, I had the chance to study this a little bit enough to write this.

Let's start for some important definitions.

FEMINISM- Women and men who fight for women's rights and against women's discrimination. It states that the rights of women must be the same to the men for the simple fact of being an human being.

EXTREME FEMINISM- when women discriminate men just for being men saying they are fighting for our rights, the opposite to it is "male chauvinism"

MALE CHAUVINISM- or what is the same, when men (and women) discriminate women just for the fact of being woman. They think they are superior because they are men and they have more rights for this or that women don't have rights at all.

MISOGYNY- Deep hate (can lead to the desire of killing, even doing it) to the female gender just for being female.

People normally confuse the two first terms "feminism" and "extreme feminism" calling feminism to the second one which is really wrong. Women do that and men as well.

The purpose of feminism is getting the equality in the society between women and men and not discriminating one just for their gender.

For example, in an office, for a woman to get a higher status in the company she needs to work double than men having the same capacities (shown in the curriculum), why? If both have the same capacity to do it why she has to work twice as harder to get the same reward? Also it can be seen in the salary, in some jobs, a man would get more salary for the same position than a woman, why? This is discrimination and this is what feminism pretends to fix.

That's just an example of many.

Where we see this in our daily lifes?
Well I see it when a man talks and he is automatically respected and his words are taken as true but if is a woman who does so she is doubted, why?
Any can be wrong, any can lie, any can have a lot of knowledge or have none, we have to judge them equally not based on their gender.
Or not judge at all, that's even better, but in some cases it's necessary (job interview), when this happen, judge for what they can do, for the facts, not for how they look like (male or female)

There are many other ways of discrimination hidden in our society, they are seen as normal because "that's how it has always been" but it's discrimination. Too long to explain and it would deviate the topic, but one I would like to mention is the "vocabulary" no one pay attention to it but it discriminate the female gender.

Getting back to the main topic.

The feminism just want that women get treated fair, this wouldn't exist if the humans rights were respected fully and not depending on the gender, this started years back when women in the west didn't even have the right to study. The revolution at that time to claim their right for education is what started the feminism movement which improved the situation considerably. Still there are so much to do but it's also true that it is going out of control at times.

Putting this topic on the field of Islam. Allah gave women a lot of rights more than 1400 years ago when only 90 years ago women in the west had basically none, and 50 years ago things started to change.

What's the problem in the muslim community? Well that most of them are not educated, some women doesn't know their rights so they can't see when they are being oppressed and many men either don't know or don't want to know that women are not slaves or object that they can handle as they wish, we are human beings and that's written by Allah in the Quran and advised by the Prophet Muhammad (salla allahu allahi wa salam) in numerous hadiths. Who dares to question the women's rights commanded by Allah Himself? Fear Allah.
"I shall not lose sight of the labor of any of you who labors in My way, be it man or woman; each of you is equal to the other" (Quran 3:195)
"Verily for all men and women who have surrendered themselves unto God, and all believing men and believing women, and all truly devout men and truly devout women, and all men and women who are true to their word, and all men and women who are patient in adversity, and all men and women who humble themselves before God, and all men and women who give in charity, and all self-denying men and self-denying women, and all men and women who are mindful of their chastity, and all men and women who remember God unceasingly: for all of them has God readied forgiveness of sins and a mighty reward." (Quran 33:35)

And fear Allah too when you demand something that doesn't belong to you.

Feminism in the muslim world wouldn't exists if only men would respect women exactly how Islam teaches. So it is right when women stand up, demanding for what Allah gave them because it's the right thing to do, we can't settle for less than we deserve in certain cases. Mainly when coming to human rights, self improvement, dignity and self respect. This is unconditional. Every woman should do that, we are not under anyone, no one is above us, only Allah is and He spoke and granted us marvellous rights to use as we like, use them. (Without contradicting the other teachings of Islam of course)
However, it becomes a problem when we demand more than we should, same for men, they can't demand more than what has been established for them.

Remember, your freedom ends when someone's else freedom begins. We have to respect that.
 And Allah knows best.

Teme a Allah.

Don't Prevent Women From Going To The Mosque

Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh

Sahih Bukhari Volume:2 Book :13 Number :23, Narrated Ibn Umar:

One of the wives of Umar (bin Al-Khattab) used to offer the Fajr and the 'Isha' prayer in congregation in the Mosque. She was asked why she had come out for the prayer as she knew that Umar disliked it, and he has great ghaira (self-respect). She replied, "What prevents him from stopping me from this act?" The other replied, "The statement of Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) : 'do not stop Allah's women-slave from going to Allah s Mosques' prevents him."

It appears that some men feared the possibility of fitnah, and took this as an excuse to forbid their women to go to the mosque. This is why the Prophet (PBUH) forbade men to prevent women from attending the mosque from time to time. This is what is indicated in the first part of the hadith quoted above. Other Hadith confirm the Prophet's keenness for women to attend gatherings in the mosque, for example, the report of Mujahid ibn `Umar:"

The Prophet (PBUH) said: `Do not prevent the women from going to the mosque at night' One of the sons of `Abdullah ibn `Umar said, `We will not let them go out because it will give rise to deviation and suspicion.' Ibn `Umar rebuked him and said, `I tell you that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said such-and-such and you say, "No, we will not let them"! "See Sahih Muslim, 4/161, 162, Kitab al-salah, bab khuruj al-nisa' ila'l-masajid.

Bilal ibn `Abdullah ibn `Umar reported from his father that the Prophet (PBUH) said: "Do not deny the women their share of the mosque, if they ask your permission." Bilal said, "By Allah (SWT), we will most certainly prevent them (from going to the mosque)!" `Abdullah (his father) said to him: "I tell you that the Messengeof Allah (PBUH) said such-and-such, and you say `We will most certainly prevent them'!" Ibid., 4/162, 163.

The Prophet (PBUH) said:

"Do not prevent your women from attending the mosque if they seek your permission to do so." Ibid., 4/161"

Do not prevent the female servants of Allah (SWT) from attending the mosques of Allah (SWT)." Fath al-Bari, 2/382, Kitab al-jumu'ah, bab al-idhn li'l-nisa' bi'l-khuruj ila'l-masajid; Sahih Muslim, 4/161, Kitab al-salah, bab khuruj al-nisa' ila'l-masajid."If your womenfolk seek your permission to go to the mosque, then let them do so." Sahih Muslim, 4/161, kitab al-salah, bab khuruj al-nisa' ila'l-masajid.

Fatwa given by Yusuf Al-Qaradawi & Muzammil Siddiqi from IslamOnline.net:

There is no any hindrance for women to pray in the Mosques along with men. At the time of the Prophet, women used to perform prayers in the Mosque along with men. Not only that, but they used to attend religious classes and share the events such as the `Eid prayers with men. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, “Do not prevent the she-servants of Allah from Allah's mosques.”

Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, states the following:

Women used to attend the jama`ah or congregational Prayers and the Friday Prayers in the Prophet's Mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to urge them to stand in the last rows behind men.

At the beginning, men and women used to enter through the same door. When this caused overcrowding on entrances and exits, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him, said: "(It would be better) if this door is left for women." Upon saying so, the men made that door for women, and it became known up until today as "The Women's Door".

Moreover, women, at the time of the Prophet, used to attend the Friday Prayer; they used to perform the Prayer regularly and listen to the khutbah to the extent that one of them could recite Surat Qaf as she heard the Prophet recite it several times in the Friday khutbah. Women also used to attend the `Eid Prayers and participate in that big Islamic festival that included the old and the young, men as well as women, out in the open, all worshipping Allah.

Umm `Attiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated, "We used to be ordered to come out on the Day of the `Eid and even bring out the virgin girls from their houses and menstruating women so that they might stand behind the men and say takbir along with them and invoke Allah along with them and hope for the blessings of that day and for purification from sins." (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

Moreover, women used to attend religious sermons with men at the Prophet's house and they used to inquire about religious matters that many women nowadays would find embarrassing to ask about. For instance, `A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) praised the women of Al-Ansar for trying to understand their religion without being held back by bashfulness for they used to ask about such matters as major ritual impurity, wet dream, purificatory bath, menstruation, chronic vaginal discharge, etc.

And when women found that men's questions were taking most of the Prophet's time, they plainly requested the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to make a special day for women. So the Prophet dedicated a day for them when he used to give them lessons and sermons. (Narrated by Al-Bukhari)

Shedding more light on the issue, Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, president of the Fiqh Council of North America, adds:

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explicitly told men not to exclude women from going to the Mosque. It is reported that the wife of `Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) used to attend the congregational Prayer in the Mosque at Fajr and `Ishaa' Prayers. It was said to her, "Why do you leave home, you know that `Umar does not like that and he feels ashamed (that you leave home at that time)?" She said, "So what prevents him from stopping Me?" The person said, "It is the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) 'Do not prevent the she-servants of Allah from Allah's Mosques.'" (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

It is not obligatory for women to attend the jama`ah or congregational Prayers at the Mosque, because they have other obligations as regards their home and children. However, if they have time and feel safe to attend the Mosque, in proper Islamic dress, then they should not be stopped.

We should rather make our Mosques in such a way that men and women both have equal chance to pray there observing the rules of Prayers.

Some people, in voicing objection against women going to the Mosque, rely on what `A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said in this regard. She is quoted to have said, sometime after the Prophet’s death: "If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have seen what the women do now, he would have stopped them from coming to Mosques."

But the great scholar of Hadith Ibn Hajar states: "This statement does not say very clearly that `A'ishah gave the Fatwa that women are forbidden to come to Mosques." (Fath Al-Bari, p. 928).

It is not known that any Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or a prominent jurist forbade women from attending the prayers in the Mosque. The custom of preventing women from attending the Mosques started later in times. This unfortunately has negative impact on many of our sisters, drawing them backward and making them ignorant of their faith.

Women in the West go everywhere. They are in the markets, in malls, in restaurants, and in offices. It is ironic that some men allow them to go to all the places of temptation, but they want to stop them from coming to the places where they can pray to their Lord and learn about their faith.

Claim Your Rights / Reclama Tus Derechos

Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh

Read, Obey Allah
Ask, Claim, Act

Women in the earliest times used to ask everything and anything about Islam, never mind what it was without feeling shy or anything, to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) because they wanted to get knowledge and know her rights, furthermore they standed against any who didn't allow them to do what Allah allowed them and gained their respect by fighting for what is right and never allowing what is wrong when it comes to how we must be treated.
Then I look to the women today in some places. They don't ask, they don't use their rights, they are controlled and do what their husband tells them to do without wondering if that's ok or not, or if they want it or not. Where have been left that status that Islam gave you and the first women fought for? Did they fight in vain?
Sisters. Study Islam, you have more rights than you think and more freedon than you think.
Men adore to control, they want to control us over all... but they don't have that right, only Allah has control over all things including them, including us.
Yes we must "obey" the husband(or father, whatever) because he is the head of the family but it doesn't give him the right to take away any of our rights, he can't tell us what to do and what not to do, he can't make us submit to them, remember sisters, our submition is to Allah only. Only Allah is above you, no a simple man, a creation of Allah.
If you men think that by being "the head of the family" you can control us to your will, excuse me but you have a huge problem, study Islam and don't think you are better than women, Islam was sent for women and men not for you only. And Allah as well as RassoulAllah (PBUH) emphasised in the correct treatment of women, why? Because of this, because They knew how much you want to control us and feel superior, YOU ARE NOT. That's a dissease.

Sister. Be careful with their psicological threats. "I won't let you go to the mosque to pray because someone might rape/kidnap/kill you and how would I feel if this happens to you my love?" Come on man. This is a light thing, at the very second they feel they can manipulate you, they will and this will increase. If he really cared for you and loved you, first, he wouldn't take any right of yours away from you, second, he would go with you. Is that simple. Don't want me to go alone? Come with me then. But don't stop me from doing what is right.

Claim your right to learn about your religion by yourself. We see how some men pick up what banefit them and "forget" those things that doesn't benefit them or require them to change their behaviour to fulfill it. How can you be so selfish?? Islam is here to discipline us, to correct us, if you see you have to change something is because you are doing things wrong, don't be arrogant "I'm a man, I don't have to change". Exactly because you are a man, a creation of Allah you have mistakes that you have to change, we are not perfect, Allah knows and gave you the instructions, read them. Islam is here to change us not for you to change it to your will so it can fit your sick desires. Islam discipline us.
If you have something that Allah said it's not correct, go ahead and change it because it won't bring you any good, either in Dunya or in Akhira, or both. Do you know more than Allah? No. Astaghfirullah. So don't avoid the commands that don't benefit you directly.
We all had to change to please Allah, you are not going to be the special one, be sure of that.

And don't use the excuse "I'm human I make mistakes" to never change, to never try to be better, to justify your bad behaviour, it doesn't have justification. "I'm not the Prophet (Peace be upon him)" that's the excuse I heard the most when I tried to advice someone and they didn't want to change so they look for a justification. Of course you are not the Prophet ( Peace be upon him) no one is near to how He (Peace be upon him) was but is that an excuse to keep doing wrong when it's clearly wrong? NO MAN. Instead it should be a heart touching thing knowing you are doing something that your Prophet (Peace be upon him) cursed, forbade, never did, isn't it a shame that you come and do exactly what he (peace be upon him) told you not to do? Where is your respect???
(This is based in my own experience, I found people like this so it does exists and is what I complain about)
We all make mistakes but there are things that are not mistakes but choices and we try to put them as mistakes to not face them and accept that we did wrong.

In conclusion. Women, claim your rights and keep them because are yours, Allah gave them to you, don't reject them neither let anyone to take them from you, just think, if Allah Azzawajal Himself gave them to you, do you think there are anyone to His level, Astaghfirulillah, to remove them from you? Don't fall into false words.

Men. You are the head of the family to protect us, to keep things straight, but you are not a higher authority, you can't decide what we follow and what we don't. You are not free of sins and you are not perfect, you will have to change your manners if they are wrong.
It's for you more than for us because in the Day of Judgement, Allah will be the Judge and he will know who was good and who wasn't, who was oppressed and who was the oppressor, who forbade right and encouraged wrong, who stopped from doing right to someone who wanted to do right etc Allah will also know who picked up a part of His religion and avoided other and the reasons behind this. He will also know who, in His name, did things he wasn't allowed to.
Do you really want to be in this situation? Don't you fear Allah? Leave arrogance, egoism aside, control yourself before controlling anyone else and fear Allah.

“And it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know.” (AI-Baqarah, 2:216)

"Believer man and believer women are helpers of each other." (Touba 9, Verse 71)

Islam is for our best. Change yourself not Islam. Avoid your ugly desires not the verses of the Qur'an.
Amin.

I want to add something. I don't mean all men are like this, there are many who are a real and great example of what Islam is and I'm glad I'm their sister in Islam. This goes for those who are a shame, just that.

"El Islam no descarta los deseos
los disciplina."

Lee, Obedece a Allah

No. Astaghfirullah.

NO!.

¿No temes a Allah?

Asiya (RA) A Woman To Learn From

I've read the story of Asiya (RA), one of the best women of Jannah (Khadeejah, Fatimah, Maryam mother of Jesus are also the best women of Jannah) and I loved it so much that I thought in making a post about the morals of this story. It inspired me. Alhamdulillah.

Asiya (RA) was a great woman, a great example of how women must be, strong, independent, confident and steadfast in her faith. Her husband oppressed her and he did awful things to her, did she obey him? NO why? Because women doesn't have to obey anyone who “asks” her to give up their faith, dignity, rights, integrity or everything. We don't have to obey when he force us to do something we don't want, something we don't believe in or something bad.
We as muslims must seek knowledge and this include women, no man can stop us from this if any does so, you better be away from such people, learning is important to not be ignorant, to not be easily influences nor manipulated, can't you see it's importance?

The Prophet (saw) said: "Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim" [Ibn Majaah]

Islam has forbidden us from following any path other than the path of ‘Ilm: “And follow not that of which you have no knowledge. Verily! The hearing, and the sight, and the heart, of each of those you will be questioned (by Allah).” [Quran 17:36]

Also, we must be careful from where we learn from, study your options and if you see something negative (against the real teachings of he Quran) in it, go away from it. This is your key to Jannah, make sure you get the right one, you only have this life to do so.
A narration of Imam Zuhri springs to mind, "Be careful from whom you take your knowledge, because that is your Deen."

As a revert muslimah, I found many many MANY “brothers” and “sisters” that when they knew I was a revert they desperately wanted to “help” me and with the excuse “you know nothing” they tried to brainwash me and make me believe horrible things telling me that's what Islam says. Everytime I asked for references they said “You are douting Islam? You are not a Muslim you must believe me” “Later I can't now” and those references never came etc etc.

So my advice is, 1 if someone tells you something about Islam, ask for references ALWAYS, if what they are saying is true, they won't have any problem to give it to you, if they give them to you, check them by yourself, just in case. Don't let yourself being emotionally manipulated “Don't you trust my word? Is not my word trustworthy enough?” Things like this. Actually no, their word is not trustworthy enough so don't be afraid or sad to ask for proofs, it's your right.
Another advice which I follow without exception is, Islam is peace, love, respect... so whatever goes out of those lines, IT'S NOT ISLAM. Doubt it and search the truth, it might have been out of context or totally invented.

"La cura para la ignorancia es preguntar"
- Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu Allahi Wa Salam)

"Allah will exalt those who believe among you and those who have been granted knowledge to high ranks." [58:11]

"And say: My Lord increase me in knowledge." [20:114]

"It is only those who have knowledge among His servants that fear Allah." [35:28]

"Whoever follows a path in the pursuit of knowledge, Allah will make a path to Paradise for him. [Bukhari]

"When Allah wishes good for a person, He makes him understand the religion." [Bukhari]

In conclusion, please please please, get knowledge, be strong and stand up for your belief and rights and don't allow anyone to take them away from you. You are precious, Allah made you like this, no one on earth can make you feel the opposite. Claim what Allah has given you. Those who deny it, FEAR ALLAH, you can't decide what to follow and what don't as you can't force anyone to follow something that benefit you and ignore those that don't benefit you but does to them. Don't be arrogant, don't be selfish, don't be an hypocritical man.

May Allah guide us and give us the right knowledge and understanding of His Islam. May Make us women strong enough to stand up for our rights and men wise enough to accept them and make it easy for us. Amin

Forced Marriage (Part 2)

  • Can a woman be forced into marriage in Islam?

Absolutely not!  Let us look at what Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him said regarding this issue:

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as having said: "A woman without a husband (or divorced or a widow) must not be married until she is consulted, and a virgin must not be married until her permission is sought. They asked the Prophet of Allah (may peace be upon him): How her (virgin's) consent can be solicited? He (the Holy Prophet) said: That she keeps silence.  (Translation of Sahih Muslim, The Book of Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Book 008, Number 3303)"

Allah Almighty said in the Noble Quran:  "O ye who believe! Ye are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should ye treat them with harshness, that ye may take away part of the dower [money given by the husband to the wife for the marriage contract] ye have given them, except where they have been guilty of open lewdness; on the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. If ye take a dislike to them it may be that ye dislike a thing, and God brings about through it a great deal of good.  (The Noble Quran, 4:19)"

The following Saying is an explanation to Noble Verse 4:19:

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: "About the Qur'anic verse: 'It is not lawful for you forcibly to inherit the woman (of your deceased kinsmen), nor (that) ye should put constraint upon them.' When a man died, his relatives had more right to his wife then her own guardian. If any one of them wanted to marry her, he did so; or they married her (to some other person), and if they did not want to marry her, they did so. So this verse was revealed about the matter.  (Translation of Sunan Abu-Dawud, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Book 11, Number 2084)"
So according to Noble Verse 4:19, a woman can not be forced into marriage by any mean.

Narrated Abu Hurayrah: "The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: An orphan virgin girl should be consulted about herself; if she says nothing that indicates her permission, but if she refuses, the authority of the guardian cannot be exercised against her will.  (Translation of Sunan Abu-Dawud, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Book 11, Number 2088)"

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: "The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Consult women about (the marriage of) their daughters.  (Translation of Sunan Abu-Dawud, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Book 11, Number 2090)"

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: "A virgin came to the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) and mentioned that her father had married her against her will, so the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) allowed her to exercise her choice. (Translation of Sunan Abu-Dawud, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Book 11, Number 2091)"

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: "The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: A guardian has no concern with a woman previously married and has no husband, and an orphan girl (i.e. virgin) must be consulted, her silence being her acceptance.  (Translation of Sunan Abu-Dawud, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Book 11, Number 2095)"

The above Noble Verse 4:19 and the Sayings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him clearly explain that according to Islam, whether the woman is virgin or not, her permission is a MUST.   Her father or older brother can not force her into marriage as the Pagan Arabs and the Jews and Christians before Islam in the Middle East used to do; see Deuteronomy 25:5 in the Bible to see how women are forced into marriage.

Can the woman divorce herself from a forced marriage upon her?

As we've seen above, it is clearly forbidden in Islam to force women into marriage.   But in case this ever should happen or have happened already to any woman, then Islam allows for her to divorce herself from the man she was forced to marry.  Let us read the following:

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: "A virgin came to the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) and mentioned that her father had married her against her will, so the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) allowed her to exercise her choice. (Translation of Sunan Abu-Dawud, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Book 11, Number 2091)"

The choice that our beloved Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him gave to the woman is she can either remain married to the man, or divorce herself from him.

Forced Marriages (Part 1)

FORCED MARRIAGES ARE NOT ALLOWED IN ISLAM!!

Forced marriage is not an issue of religion, but it is a cultural practice that violates the right of a woman and as a Muslim. The act of forcing someone to marry is in fact an act that is against the practices and teachings of Islam.

Some think that consent of the bride and/or groom is not needed in marriage or as long as the parents of the female agree to the proposal then it is allowed. This is a wrong concept. Marriage in Islam is suppose to be a beautiful and blessed time for both men and women.

Forced marriages are clearly not acceptable according to The Quran:

O you who believe, it is not lawful for you to inherit the women by forcibly/unwillingly... [4:19]

Marriage is done by mutual agreement:

When you divorce women and they have completed their waiting term do not hinder them from marrying other men if they have agreed to this in a fair manner. [2:232]

All examples in The Quran involving decisions between marriage partners are in the reciprocal Arabic word form, e.g. "taraadaa" [2:232-233, 4:24], "tashaawar" [2:233], which means they are mutual.

The relationship between a husband and wife is discussed in affectionate terms in The Quran, not of one enforcing decisions on the other:

And among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquillity with them, and He has put love and mercy between your hearts. Verily in that are signs for those who reflect. [30:21]

...They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them.... [2:187]

And they say, "Our Lord, let our spouses and children be a source of joy for us, and let us be the foremost among the righteous." [25:74]

In The Quran, there is a pre-marriage requirement for a male to give the female a dower, see the following examples in which the female is involved in the decision making process:

And give the women their due dowries willingly, and if they remit any of it to you of their own will, then you may take it with good feelings. [4:4]

...And unto those with whom you desire to enjoy marriage, you shall give the dowers due to them; but you will incur no sin if, after [having agreed upon] this lawful due, you freely agree with one another upon anything else... [4:24]

Lastly, The Quran reminds us that believers are those who conduct their matters by mutual consultation/counsel [42:38]

The following hadith also clarifies the position of forced marriages in Islam;

Khansa Bint Khidam said “My father married me to his nephew, and I did not like this match, so I complained to the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings be upon him). He said to me “accept what your father has arranged.” I said “I do not wish to accept what my father has arranged.”

He said “then this marriage is invalid, go and marry whomever you wish.” I said “I have accepted what my father has arranged, but I wanted women to know that fathers have no right in their daughter’s matters (i.e. they have no right to force a marriage on them).
(Fathul Bari Sharah Al Bukhari 9/194, Ibn Majah Kitabun Nikah 1/602)

At first, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told Al Khansa to obey her father, and this is as it should be, because the concerns of fathers for the well being of their daughters is well known. But when he realized that her father wanted to force her in to marriage she did not want, he gave her the freedom to choose, and saved her from the oppression of a father who wanted to force her into an unwanted marriage. The choice that our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave to the Al- Khansa is she can either remain married to the man, or divorce herself from him.

This has become a very common issue in today's society. However Islam does not allow force marriage, this must be known to every parent!!
